Gratuities
I haven’t worked in a job that included tipping since 1981. In 1979 I suddenly became a single parent and needed a second income. I soon learned about tipping as a part of making a living. I was the Senior Chaplain at The Enid State School during the day, and three or four nights a week I worked as a waiter at the Peppermill steak house. It was a fascinating life as I moved from a profession where I lead a team of eight, who provided pastoral care to over a 1000 people, with every variety of developmental disabilities, to…

Holly
I picked her up in Capitol Hill a little after six in the morning. It was a fairly long ride out east. I thought I recognized the address and asked, “Do you work at the medical complex?” She replied very directly, “No, I work at a treatment center in the detox unit.” It was the 2nd of January and I commented, “I bet this was a very busy weekend for you.” “You have got that right, it’s kind of hard to watch.” “How long have you worked there?” I asked. “Almost 5 years” she replied. “Wow, you are truly committed…

Ed part II
After nearly 14 months of picking up total strangers and inviting them into “Red” to take them to or from their home, an airbnb, DIA, school, their job, the 5th bar of the day, or the Denver Zoo, I continue to be amazed as to the ‘Magic’ that can happen in the micro-space of a very ordinary SUV. They were college students from The University of Tennessee who were…

Ed I went to my first Denver Bronco experience in 1960. The fledgling American Football League was in its infancy and The Denver Broncos were born. They came to Pueblo to play an “inter-squad” game in the high school stadium to drum up excitement for ‘professional football’. What I remember about that game were the yellow and brown used uniforms and the striped vertical socks. We saw Gene Mingo (now of Ring of Fame status) kick a 65 yard toe-style field goal through the uprights. I am a fan from the beginning and for life and I have the tattoo…

Prelude
Prelude One of the great challenges in my life is to actually live by what I believe. “Do the next right thing” has been a bench mark of how I have tried to live my life since finding 12-step recovery in l987. I am a planner, someone who can tell you what I will be doing and where I will be doing it seven months in advance. However, I did not plan for “retirement”. I had thoughts about what it might be like but I had spent the last 39 years of my life in some sort of ministry, where…
